Fluoride is a naturally occurring mineral that's frequently added to tap water as well as found in some food sources. It's also an active ingredient in many kinds of toothpaste and mouth rinses. In terms of its value to oral health, fluoride protects tooth enamel, from the corrosive effects of dental plaque, which is a sticky film that continuously accumulates in the mouth. As the harmful bacteria in dental plaque metabolize sugars, they produce acids that can erode tooth enamel and cause the development of cavities. By accelerating the remineralization of teeth to build up and strengthen the dental enamel, fluoride helps to combat decay.
As part of our program of preventive care, a fluoride treatment is provided at your child’s periodic checkup visit, along with a comprehensive examination and dental cleaning. Fluoride treatments may also be recommended for adults who have a high risk of developing cavities. For extra protection against cavities, our office may also recommend dental sealants, which are protective coatings painted on the biting surfaces of your child's newly erupted permanent premolars and molars.
